Although he started out with the rebellious Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Millais later became quite conventional in the art
world. He was knighted in 1878. In 1896 he was elected president of the Royal Academy. He died later that year and was
buried in Artists' Corner in
St Paul's Cathedral. The portrait of
Spencer Cavendish, 8th Duke of Devonshire, in the
Sketch Gallery at
Chatsworth was painted by Millais.
