In the story... As chatelaine of Devonshire House, Diana is hostess for their annual ball in May 1855. She partners Prince Albert in the opening dance while the Duke of Devonshire partners Queen Victoria. The whole time that Diana is engaging such society in London, her betrothed in the Crimea thinks she is leading her usual secluded life in Derbyshire.
