In the story... Spencer, Louisa and Diana spend a few days here during their northern progress in 1855. It's a chance for Spencer to impress Diana with one more component of his future inheritance when he becomes the 8th Duke of Devonshire.

The wide, slow, shallow River Wharfe twists 90 degrees to pass violently through the narrow, deep Strid on the Bolton Abbey estate. It looks like an easy jump across but it's unforgiving if you fall in.
